People who have been a victim of catfishing, what happened and how did you find out they weren't who they said they were?

Chubby brunette wallflower i met through a online videogame sent pictures of a hot, popular busty blonde friend of hers.
Something felt fishy about her story. So i did some digging online and found out the truth.
The ironic thing is that i would gladly have gone out on a date with her real self. But she felt the need to look like a "hot" girl i suppose.
Years ago I chatted with a girl online for a bit (met her on OKC I believe) and we decided to meet up. We had been chatting for a few days and she seemed normal and very sweet. I'm gay and always love to meet new people in the community even if I'm not romantically interested so I figured why not? Met up with her at a restaurant and when she walked in and said my name she looked SO much younger than the girl in the pictures.
The girl in the pictures was her 25 year older sister. This girl was 15 and using her sisters pictures to talk to people because she didn't think people would take her seriously if she said she was 15.
I lectured her for 20 minutes about how dangerous what she was doing was.
after the 2nd time I suggested meeting up offline for a date and him getting weird about it, I google image searched his profile picture and found that it was an imagine of some minor German soccer player who was married with multiple kids.
Not a victim, more of a witness to something really sad. When my roommate got into internet relay chats in the mid-90's he was invited to a meetup of people in that town. We are greeted at the door by an overweight Asian guy in drag who swears that he is the sister of the guy that set up the meet up. There is a half dozen people already there and they say the guy pulls this every time: dresses up as woman and thinks everyone is fooled. He then excuses himself, takes an hour long quick change, and returns in men's clothing. Absolutely nobody cared and just chatted among themselves.

I was catfished by an old crush. She found me on social media, we chatted for awhile, exchanged numbers, and then she proceed to always be busy when we were supposed to meet up. Eventually we met up; she put on about 80lbs since the last time I had seen her. We still had our 'date', but man did I feel suckered.

I met a girl on tinder, she was the only match who was replying to my texts. I thought something was up when my girlfriend said something about it and I hadnt told her about the conversation in detail. I snooped her phone and found out it was her.
I remember listening to that song.

My Brother-in-law was a victim. He send this person all kinds of money. Even at one point she said that she was flying to see him and needed money for a ticket. He sent her the money ( even though we tried multiple times to talk him out of it). He even went as far as going to the airport to pick her up. Of course, she never showed. A few days later this person said they got robbed on the way and needed him to send more money.
He finally gave up on it after that. I felt bad for him and even upset how people can do these things to others.
I have a friend, a lady in her 50s or 60s who fell for the same kind of thing despite all her family and friends telling her it was a scam. She ended up sending so much money over time she had to sell her house! She only stopped when the guy pulled the same "I'm flying in to meet you" thing, only in his case the excuse was he got caught in immigration detention (where oddly he was still able to call and email her daily - in real life it's more like a regular jail, communication is very restricted).
I think what happens are people are so desperate for love they ignore all of the red flags. I am still not sure exactly how much he spent, but I know it was more than what he could afford. It's sad scams like this exist.
