When the night billows down on Nebraska
The November sun dips low round here
Lower than in most other places
There’s a dreamy little farm perched up on a hill
And a cornfield for ten thousand paces
You’re pushed up in the seat, you aren’t looking at me
And the autumn wind is getting bolder
I don’t know what I did, I never really do
And it only gets worse as we get older and colder
And when night billows down on Nebraska
Everyone but us is sharing a bed
When the reds go black and the pinks turn white
We are blind to the curve up ahead
God knows, God knows that I’m sorry
That we never really figured out a plan
It was one of those things that felt right at the time
And we had a working four-door sedan
As I stretch out my hand to touch you on the cheek
I can hear you shake and starting to cry
The fireflies around us had better move along
For their efforts are lost on both you and I
And when night billows down on Nebraska
There’s a hundred different things to regret
We’re a shadow in the shade of a long dusty road
And we’re not even halfway home yet
And when night billows down on Nebraska
There’s a figure alone underneath a grey moon
I don’t remember the last time I saw you
But perhaps we’ll meet again soon
