[PSA] Today's Firefox Nightly fixes the font issue with freetype2-2.8.1

So $AUR_HELPER -S firefox-nightly and enjoy. The fix was also backported to firefox-55.0.3-2 currently in [testing].

If you're on a different build and need a temporary workaround, set the prefs:

  • gfx.canvas.azure.backends
  • gfx.content.azure.backends

In about:config to cairo.

If you're on the latest Nightly/stable from the Arch repos, you can reset those back to skia.

firefox 55.0.3-3 in testing fixed the issue too, two days ago. Stable should not need a workaround or are there other reasons except font rendering issues?

I wasn't aware stable got patched. Looking at it now, the patch that fixes it actually landed in 55.0.3-2.

firefox is so slow.... use chrome.

I've done a lot of comparing recently between the two, on a "feel" basis.

What I found between Firefox vs. Chromium:

launching chromium felt a very little bit faster, and didn't have some weird visual stuff during the load like firefox does.

Chromium seems to render a web page a bit quicker, but unless you have very good net, it is not super noticeable.

Chromium had a few more specialty apps, but they're all over the place, as there is something with like... Independent apps from the browser... Which kind of sucked in my opinion.

Firefox had a beautiful new add-on for sandboxing called Containers.

That last point is the reason I use firefox. The fact that I can open a website (outlook mail) 4 times for 4 different accounts in the one window basically trumps any slight speed benefit for me.

How can you open 4 different account in the same window? Quite interested on that feature

Check out the "containers" test pilot add-on. Its currently in opt-in testing, but its pretty much great.

Chrome is a slightly more bloated version of Chromium dude

I do find Firefox slower to launch, but once it's launched I can hardly notice the difference in rendering speeds.

Chrome lacks a bunch of add-ons that make my browsing experience better. It also takes a huge chunk of my limited vertical pixels with the title bars and tabs on my laptop. That may all change with upcoming Firefox updates to add-ons so I might end up switching back to chrome wither I like it or not.

firefox-nightly with a few of the experiments turned on is very noticeably faster than chrome on my machine.

People like choices. I myself use Chromium, however some people may prefer the privacy of Firefox. Also noticed it's easier to develop in Firefox.

chrome is still better.

Alright.. no need to be an elitist? Some people like their privacy...

So don't put your life online.

How hard is this for people.
