Swipe Up for Google Search replacement?

General Discussion

4.5 has removed the Swipe Up for Google Search option which is something I was using constantly. Extremely annoying to have to open the browser app and open a new tab or having to add the ugly widget.

Is there any way to get this gesture back?

Why not use Nova Launcher?

Yeah that's definitely an option I'm considering. I've never used Nova though, I assume based on your comment that Nova has this option build in?

Quite annoying that upgrading my phone requires me to switch interface software to keep functionalities though.

Yeah, though you might have to set it up manually, I don't remember what the default settings are.

Software upgrades for all devices very often come with removed features, it's just how it goes. I'm not sure why OnePlus did that, but there was probably a decent reason.

I would have to pay 5 bucks for the premium version of Nova Launcher to activate gestures functionality.

There has to be a better option to get this basic feature back.

I have Apex launcher, it's free and has gesture features.

It doesn't have app search in the drawer (type in the first few letters of the app name and it will show you the app), but for that I use https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=rjt.appsearch&hl=en

But you can use the Google page where you swipe right, like on the pixel.

How do I set that up in the oneplus launcher?

I tried a few launchers that had this functionality, but I always had to tap the search bar to begin typing, which is exactly what I am trying to avoid.

The old swipe up to search allowed you to immediately start typing after the swipe.

Doesn't it provide the basic gestures for free?

Nova is more than worth it.

I've added google now search shortcut to the missing middle slot in the dock as a temperary solution. But I agree, I've been using that feature extensively, why would they hey rid of it :(

Yeah. I've done this too. I don't mind it, but it makes me realize that the change to the launcher was a wash for me. They "opened up" a dock slot by adding a gesture, but then I needed to use that spot to replace my gesture.

Well, supposedly there are some other useful changes in the update, but yeah I completely agree :)

Do you mean just the chrome button which leads to your last opened page? Or am I missing a way to add a Google Search shortcut there?

No, find "Google" app in the app drawer, long press will give actions, one of them is search that can be dragged to the home screen. This shortcut does the same thing swiping up used to do.

Nope, it's the Google app you need to add.

You can always go for button actions. I have Assistant set up on long press of home button. Maybe try that out?

Try Evie launcher, it is my favourite one and has a very nice search feature.
