Never Root

He never dug a hole so deep he fit
inside its shadow never felt mud jammed
up underneath his fingernails or found
a rock that had been buried since before
the humans surfaced never broke his leg
from falling in each time he tried to climb
back out oh he will talk about the trees
all day but never search below their roots.
