Is there a way to stop the AI from blobbing and coming at you single file every single fight?

Or there is something wrong with my install and the AI in TWWH2 is just acting weird for me? I felt the AI actually had a plan in TWWH1. In this they just charge at you in a giant blob. It's not interesting to fight especially considering how powerful magic is in this game. The number of times my Malekith got 500+ kills is ridiculous.
