Peripherals

I know it's very specific but I'm just looking for peoples opinions on the current small selection out there!

I have S2417DG and although it is 24" the 27" variant should be all the same. I really like mine, 1440p is nice, 165Hz is nicer but G-Sync is really briliant thing to have

56
koopai•

I went and saw all the popular 1440p 144hz monitors at Microcenter and it reaffirmed my decision to choose the 27 inch Dell. I had originally had the 24 inch and returned it for the bigger monitor. I could not tell a noticeable difference between the TN panel of the Dell and the IPS of the other monitors. I always sit in front of my monitor so the viewing angle part is rather irrelevant for me.

The colors out of the box on the Dell are definitely not "wowy" but once you calibrate it, it looks great IMO.

11
SinOfDeath69•

Hi I also have the Dell 27inch, can you link me your calibration settings? Also, mine has a pretty bad color banding issue, does yours?

2
koopai•

I installed the ICC Profile they made here and messed with my OSD settings a bit and I don't notice bad color banding. Hope this helps!

1
SinOfDeath69•

Cool thank you so much I'll be trying these settings when I get home. And yeah I get color banding, the absolutely most noticeable is when I'm on the steam application, the grey background shows it. Hopefully changing the settings will help

1
VVrest•

they all have color banding issues, that's the biggest problem with the monitor

I don't really notice it when gaming but if I'm watching a video or looking at a still dark image I can definitely see it

1
KappaTrader•

Besides size were there other factors that made you choose the 27” over the 24”? I’m deciding between those two Dell monitors

1
koopai•

Before the Dell, I was using a 24 inch 144hz Asus monitor that I bought in 2013. I had thought that 24 inch was the perfect size (I think it is for 1080p, still). When I got the 24 inch Dell, everything seemed great. I actually didn't realize I wanted the 27 inch until I went to Microcenter and saw it in person. The pixel density is more noticeable on the 27 inch (comparing a 27 inch 1080p to a 1440p makes a bigger difference than 24 inch). After seeing the bigger one in person, and realizing I liked the picture and size more, I made the decision to return the 24 and pickup the 27.

3
KappaTrader•

Thank you for the detailed response! I’ve heard nothing but positive things for both sizes of this monitor...I should probably head over to Microcenter and check them out for myself since it seems like it really comes down to personal preference.

Michelanvalo•

To back up what u/koopai said I jumped from a 24" to a 27" about 2 years ago and it's just so much nicer. A 1440P 27" is just such a massive step up and it really changes your gaming and browsing experience. I could never go back to 24" after using 27".

Though I am planning on upgrading it up to a 30" ultrawide next. So ya know.

1
pepe_le_shoe•

I would not recommend the 27 (S2716DG). I had to return mine because it had terrible colour banding issues, even after extensive recalibration.

1

I'm always curious what other people have done calibration wise. I also have the screen. How did you set it up?

1
koopai•

I set it up following this https://pcmonitors.info/reviews/dell-s2716dg/

Only difference is I kept my OSD brightness a bit higher.

1
GStanfield•

Can you tell the exact same model? We don't have Microcenter in Italy and I'm looking for a new 2k monitor aswell.

(Actually where I live there are 0 shops with 1440p monitor on display...)

1
koopai•

S2716DG

1
GStanfield•

Thanks!

1
AllenAkbar•

How did u overclock it? I tried doing it on mine but everytime it restarts to change the refresh rate it won't display anything and I have to reset the monitor.

1
Hihna•

In the monitor settings, there is option to do that. Make sure you have S2417DG sonce it is the only one which can do 165Hz for sure. S2716DG and S2416DG cannot

1
insomniac34•

Represent! I've had the 27-inch version for almost two years now - gaming has never been more fluid and beautiful. Best monitor I've ever owned - and I've owned a bunch over the years. I would compare the purchase of this monitor, which was my first 144hz display, to some of the most profoundly noticeable hardware upgrades of my life: it sits right alongside my Radeon 9800 Pro back in 2004 and my first SSD in 2011 in terms of the "holy fuck I now see the light" factor.

1
willster191•

The 27" only has up to 144Hz, and both monitors struggle with color banding issues. They're good monitors for the price though. After calibration, the colors are pretty accurate.

1
Tharsis-evo•

Asus pg279q is a good one

33
needTPforbunghole•

I have one of these - very happy with it

10
rauno266•

Best display I've ever had.

8
WoodyWho•

Another vote here. Couldnt be happier with this display

5
notthisperson•

I have the pg278q. Best monitor I've ever had, and you can get some used ones for a pretty great deal

5
fluffsta007•

I have this monitor. Amazing quality.

5
socokid•

I have this display as well.

It's a little more expensive than some of the others, but I love the build quality and aesthetics. Amazing display.

3
syqnick•

absolutely this one. i just finished building my pc and it runs like a dream.

3
sockalicious•

Another owner here, 100% delighted with this display.

3
filofil•

I don't have this monitor, but amazing indeed.

2
Gazalar85•

I have the Acer predator XB271HU and absolutely love it.

26
Catalisticise•

Refurbished models get posted pretty frequently on Acer Recertified (if you sub to r/buildapcsales you'll see them all the time). Picked up a refurb about a year ago and now I can never go back to less than 1440p or less than 144+ hz.

5
Longniuss•

I have a 1070 atm with an Acer predator XB271HU, can a 1070 handle 1440 better than 1080 or handle 1440 well?

2
Catalisticise•

I'm on a 980 ti (pretty equivalent to 1070) and have no problems with 1440p. Most of the games I play aren't too demanding (overwatch is the hardest to run and I still keep 200+ fox rendered) so for me it's great. The only game that I've really run into issues with is Witcher 3 but turning off Hairworks and turning down settings to High has me back up to around 80 frames.

TL;DR: I wouldn't sweat upgrading GPU rn with the current market if you already have a 1070

3
Longniuss•

I have a 1070 right now but I Like to record game play and considered what 2K, 4K, or 1440p would be like because atm I have my 1070 with my monitor running 144hz refresh at 1080p.

1
thejoelhansen•

I've used both on my XB271HU.

BF1: 1070 was dishing out ~90FPS on 1440/Ultra, while the 1080 yielded 110FPS.

1070 is powerful enough to make the XB271HU totally worth it IMO

1
Hawkman312•

How much do they go for as refurbished?

1

1

same

1
Viper0us•

This is what I use. Fantastic monitor.

1
peege23•

Was it worth the money? I'm on the verge of ordering one myself and the price tag is making me feel a ton of guilt.

1
Gazalar85•

Absolutely. If you can afford it buy it

2
thejoelhansen•

Ditto and ditto. Worth every penny.

Refurbs have a dead pixel tolerance of 3 per square inch. I ordered one, had 3 dead pixes in the dead center, returned it, saved up and bought it new.

Worth it for a higher chance of no dead pixels IMO.

1
MaXKiLLz•

I own two Dell S2716DG monitors. One for each gaming system. Love ‘em. Recommended.

11
friendly_jerk•

Me too!

1
coffee-9•

these go on sale for around $350 every few weeks/months!

1
Spindecision•

S2716DG

The freesync one does. This one, which is the Gsync one usually only drops to around $450.

1
eddy_v•

27" does get under $400 on occasional sales. Almost always is on sale for $450 though.

shitlord_traplord•

If you follow r/buildapcsales you would've seen the s2716dg hit $385 a month ago, no rebates required.

Here's the post

Please don't post misinformation :)

1
Spindecision•

It doesn't get that low every few months. That's a once or maybe twice a year type of deal.

1
socokid•

S2716DG

They are very nice for the price, with quick response times, but are TN panels (if that matters to you). Just an FYI.

1
shadowmilk•

Seconded. Even though they're TN, it's an incredibly high quality TN panel. You won't get the viewing angles of an IPS, but you can almost color match when viewing straight on with the right settings.

1
leecherby•

I have a Acer Predator XB271HU (27" 1440p 165Hz IPS G-Sync), best monitor I've ever had for pretty much everything and even for 4K streaming I usually prefer it over my 4K Dell P2415Q (or a big 1080p TV for that matter).

Airsoft. Where I live you would never be allowed to store your stuff like that, even if you lived in a safe.

2

Well considering you can't just go out and buy an M249, I'm going to assume they're not real...

Edit: for correctness

You beat me to a response before I made my edit. I mistook it for an M60 at first glance but it's actually an M249.

1

They are not real, all airsoft. EU luckily has strict gun laws.

Airsoft.

4
eLZhi•

I got lucky with Viewsonic XG2703 :)

5
flipsider101•

Are we a rare breed? I looked extensively on the internet between this, Asus, Acer, and AOC, and from what I've gathered, Viewsonic has the best factory color calibration of all. I LOVE mine! The only thing that irks me is that it doesn't have swivel. Oh and the buttons can get annoying too if you're fiddling with it.

1
eLZhi•

i was thinking about buying a 1440p/144hz+/IPS/G-Sync monitor ever since they were released, lol.

all the negative reviews put me off tbh, and i only bought it 3 months ago.

i believe at the time it was the latest monitor with 144hz+/IPS and all that good stuff, which was one of the reasons i decided to buy it, the other being their RMA is better than the horrorshow from Asus.

and yeah i'm very happy with it, coming from an old Dell U2711 (also IPS) which has very heavy AG coating it felt like a glossy screen at first :D

i'm glad i bought it, but the downside is I need a better GPU now, 1070 is just now powerful enough :(

1
plsgodhelpmenow•

I ordered one, expecting to receive it today, will report. Wish me luck.

1
_OVERHATE_•

+1 for the Dell S2716DG. It still amazes me from time to time like "how the fuck can you look so gorgeous"

5
IIWhiTeIIHaWkII•

ASUS ROG P279. It is 165hz but hopefully that is close enough. It is also IPS and looks amazing.

5
shrtnm•

Me too. I 100% concur with the above statement.

2
IIWhiTeIIHaWkII•

Wanna give me yours so I can have a dual monitor setup? I have a 1080p monitor I will trade 😏

1
shrtnm•

I'd have a hard time letting it go if someone offered me 100% of the price I paid for it. It's an outstanding monitor. Going from my crappy Dell work monitor to that beast at home is an absolute joy.

1
IIWhiTeIIHaWkII•

Yeah going to work is even worse now because I have to go back to 1080p and lose half my spreadsheets real estate lol.

1
Nemeczekes•

AOC AGON AG271QG here. Mine is working right but a lot of people in PL had many issues. Good thing is if you have BL you can ask for new one from AOC (which should get you brand new one). But energy consumption is a bitch.

3
Dooleyz•

Hey i currently have last years generation of this ----> (ASUS 27" PG278QR 1ms, 2560x1440, HDMI & Display Port 1.2, USB 3.0 Ports, WQHD G-Sync 165Hz ROG Monitor) and i can honestly say its the nicest monitor ive ever had. It can also overclock up to 165hz.

Check it out!

2
FulminatingMoat•

Acer XB271HU is the same panel and basically identical except for price and design so have a look at that too.

4
AjinoMoto412•

Add to this, its bezel-less (barely noticeable anyway) until the bottom of the screen itself then you get the predator logo

2
TacticalBeerCozy•

All the IPS models are the same panel, just different frames/software. I got a viewsonic refurb for $550 and its amazing. But you are taking a risk with backlight bleed since most of the panels are also shit.

TN is easier and cheaper, but... TN

2
OriginalOreos•

I have the Asus P279Q IPS.

I, however, bought it refurbished for a fraction of the price on Newegg. Most people tend to send them back because of light bleed or something related, not because they're actually defective. Mine works like a charm. G-sync is amazing.

2
aballz4•

No all answers are invalid: Dell Gaming S2716DG is 1440p 144hz (24" model oc to 165) has a USB 3 hub. Dell stands are arguably the best. Very good on screen controls: g sync enabled. I got mine new for under 500$

1
SalvaXr•

I mean, he asked for a 27" and you recommended a 24"

Edit: Didn't check the model you mentioned, only responded to this part:

(24" model oc to 165)

Here is a link to Dell's page for that model, it is indeed 27" and I was wrong, sorry about that.

1
_OVERHATE_•

S27 is a 27"

4
SalvaXr•

Oh sorry, should've checked the model before commenting, added an edit to my comment

2
_OVERHATE_•

No probs mate

2
IVRings•

The S2716 is 27".

2
bloodstainer•

I play on:

  • 1920x1080 144hz, 24 inch TN panel Acer display, it's good for gaming, great latency (as in low next to none), but horrible viewing angles.

  • 2560x1440 165Hz, 27 inch G-sync IPS panel from Acer my latest edition and I love it, ever since switching to IPS I couldn't go back, and this is my first high refresh rate IPS panel, it's great!

  • 2560x1440 60Hz, 27 inch IPS panel, I also love it, bought it used from a guy who's gotten kids and nolonger game, this was the reason why I no longer want 1080p or TN panels, I'd say get IPS panel if you've already gotten into the price range of 144hz, 1440p g-sync, IPS is so better image quality in my opinion!

  • 3840x2160 60Hz, 55 inch Samsung TV while the image quality is good, the input lag is by far the worst, and it's hard to push framerate on this.

I will give the 24 inch 144hz monitor to my step son for playing overwatch on, and my next purchase will be a 27inch 1440p 60hz ips panel, because as a secondary monitor I prefer matching size and resolution, and in my opinion as I no longer play a lot of games, IPS > Higher refreshrate, but in certain games, I would totally understand wanting higher refreshrate, my problem is that most of the games I play now are single-player experiences with my GF like Senua's Sacrifice, Skyrim, Witcher, or co-op experiences like Ibb & obb, Trine 2, AntiChamber, Keep Talking and Nobody explodes, Lovers in a dangerous spacetime, and as such image quality goes before higher refreshrate.

  • But don't misjudge this as me not wanting higher refresh rate I love higher refrshrates this is why my latest panel is a no-compromise 165Hz, G-sync IPS panel at 1440p 27Inch, at that pixel density I prefer 1440p due to me being able to push higher refreshrates than in 4k, and quite frankly, there arne't any ips 4k panels with g-sync with higher than 60hz out there!
1
Robthegoat•

I'm pretty sure the acer predator x34. Correct me if I'm wrong tho

1
k0rm•

The x34 isn't 4k (2160x3840), it's 1440x3440. Basically just 1440p with some extra on each end.

1
Robthegoat•

Ohhh okay. Thanks for clarifying

1
rogue0tter•

I have the dell S2716DG which is exactly these specs and it’s sexy. I know people have been mentioning this already but I just wanted to add another voice. It’s prett expensive but it often goes on sale for $450 and lower.

1
MrCrybaby86•

I have the Dell S2716DG and it's great. My advice would be to keep checking refurbished stock and look out for coupon codes, I ended up getting mine for $180.00 :D

1
pepe_le_shoe•

The IPS ones have all got the exact same panel inside them, because there's only one company producing them apparently. The chance of getting a dead pixel is very high, so buy from amazon, and be prepared to keep returning them until you get one with no dead pixels. Other than that, they're great, but also kind of overpriced. I would advise against the viewsonic one, because their stand doesn't rotate.

If you go for a TN one, be a stickler for colour banding and backlight bleed. People are way too lax and forgiving on these two issues, and if you notice any uneven backlighting on a TN, you should feel justified in immediately sending it back. Also, don't settle for a monitor that turns this test into a barcode, which a lot of them do.

Lastly, and this is probably just a subjective opinion on my part, but unless you also use your screen as a TV, and sit far away from it, consider getting something smaller than 27". For gaming, when you're sat right in front of it, I find it slightly too big, and the only reason I didn't get something smaller is because it doubles as our living room TV.

1
SpartonDawg•

I have a Dell S2716DG (27” 1440p 144hz g-sync) I picked it up at microcenter in the summer for around $550, it’s a TN panel but it is one of the better TN panels for sure. I highly recommend this monitor, it’s small bezel and looks professional not all ‘gamer’ red and black. If money is no issue idk why you wouldn’t get a ROG SWIFT or predator variant with IPS for $700-800.

I came from a 144hz 1080p 24inch and it was still a big upgrade, gaming is awesome. Just make sure you have the power to get the most out of it!

1
Doochbagg•

I have Acer Predator XU271 something like that, it's awesome.

1
peji911•

I have a Dell 27". The monitor is nice BUT I.can't get it at 144Hz on my x370 with 1080 rog strix. I'm starting to think 144 is a waste

1
PeritusOP•

What on earth isn't that 1080 ripping through?

2
peji911•

I have no idea. I am not very good with PCs and went with reddit's recommendations.

I spent a lot of money on this and I'm not noticing anything better than my previous build, which was way worse spec wise.

Hell, even on something simple like CS:GO I notice stutter and get nothing more than 60FPS... never happened on old PC.

1
Hetfield88•

Dude, my build from 2011 with a gtx465 got 100 fps on csgo. I would look into nvidia drivers possibly. Maybe you even plugged the monitor into the motherboard instead of the gpu. Anyway, something is definitely wrong.

1
