I'm too Tired to find a pun for October: INTRO THREAD

NEWBIE COPY PASTA

The sidebar is a great resource for new Heathens. We would highly suggest reading through the FAQ and Reading List first. Most of this stuff isn't something we can impart to you via Reddit, but we can help guide you along. The general consensus is that there are three great books to start with : A Practical Heathen's Guide to Asatru by Patricia LaFaylive, We Are Our Deeds by Eric Wodening, and Culture of the Teutons by Vilhelm Grönbech. Generally, A Practical Guide covers the bargain basement basics, and will instruct on general rituals (ignore the use of the Hammer Rite or Sign of the Hammer), while We Are Our Deeds covers the Heathen worldview by using language to guage the importance of many things, and Culture of the Teutons highlights cultural aspects of pre-Chr8istian Heathenry. You may also want to look into Tacitus' Germania down the line.

You might find some interesting information in the recent HeathenTalk podcast that some of our regulars have done. There's a lot of good information for newer Heathens in episode 3 - here's the show page where you can see the archives. Search through the show archives there for topics you might be interested. Lots of nuance discussed in an academic, though functional, way.

Finally, some unwritten rules for the sub:

  • Own your words. If you make a mistake, roll with it and hang in there. We're all learning, and we all make mistakes.
  • Sometimes you might feel like someone's coming down on you hard. Don't stress it. We mean well.
  • Don't delete your threads. They'll be immediately resurrected by the mods. Generally, this is a mixture of the first two rules with the added point that all conversation is learning conversation.
  • r/AskAHeathen is a joke sub. Post your serious questions here.

Hey y'all! I'm Kurt from rural Washington--still a solo Heathen, someday that'll change. I've recently been getting pretty good at Heathenry I think. I'm finally getting my lazy self around to reading Culture of the Teutons (I made a kindle-friendly PDF if anyone's interested). I'm currently procrastinating an anthropology project in which I am to write about the culture of the Norsemen (yes--I got to pick my own topic).

Hello. I kind of already made a post. And I think someone already blocked me for it... It says there are six comments but I only see five. Oh well... I became a full heathen some time this summer.

I can't resist my curiosity. Were you a diet heathen previous to this summer? Half the guilt and all of the blot.

Welcome.

If you had been banned you wouldn't have been able to comment in this post.

Heilsa, I am Torbjorn, I have been a practicing vitki for over 10 years now, and am slowly building a community in my area. I have just started a Pagan Student Association on my campus to combat the prevalence of the Campus Christian Foundation.

What exactly does a vitki do in the modern day?

I do rune readings, I learn and try to model my life around the runes, and am studying to become a full gothar. The runes where what first drew me to this path.

Hi all. I’ve been a heathen for about 5 years, ever learning. I’m new to being involved in the reddit community.

Hello strangers. I'm a baby heathen, just found out about this maybe... a week ago? I've been stalking the reddit page, listening to the podcast a bit, and ordered myself the Practical Heathen's Guide. Only recently created an account so I could pester you all about the things I don't know.
