That's a very nice map and I think you should post it to r/mapporn. It makes me wish I weren't colorblind.

Also, are we all just giving that arsonist a pass now? I notice he still hasn't been charged with a crime.

Yeah I’m really bummed out he dropped out of the news cycle so quickly. I still want my pound of flesh.

Edit: incidentally, I’m working recently on design for a municipal transit system and have had to do a lot of research into designing for accessibility for color blind folks, e.g. of bus routes are identified only as green and blue, some people may not be able to distinguish them. Anyway, it means I have some neat tools bookmarked.

One of them can correct images to make them more visible for different types of color blindness. Here’s the link to the tool with the results for the map image.

I hope it helps!

Is there a way to make the maps bigger? I keep clicking on them and nothing happens. BTW in addition to being colorblind I am also stupid. :)

It’s because I’m on my phone and the original map image is in a PDF or some format where my phone doesn’t want to let me save the image, so I used a screenshot (which is pretty small). I recommend going to that site on a computer and using the real image. You just upload the image and select how strong you want the conversion effect to be. I hope it makes it easier to see!

Investigating the crime scene and collecting physical evidence takes time and I assume can't be completely done until after the fire was extinguished. The investigation regarding a fire of this size, that caused as much distress for so many people, is probably going to take time to get it right.

I'm not surprised charges haven't been filed yet, but would be disappointed if they aren't by the end of the year.

Oregon law limits parental liability to 7500 bucks. What they do to juveniles for crime?

In my experience, they put them in county for 3 weeks and forget about them.

I hope this will give Oneonta Gorge and the Eagle Creek Trail each a long rest from visitors, evening out people visiting other trails which might reopen sooner. It will also be interesting to see what happens to the Oneonta log jam.

Yeah, I'm wondering if it will be even worse, since it looks like the fire was pretty severe over there.

I expect that walking up the stream will no longer be allowed. Before the fire there was growing talk about restricting it in order to improve water quality for fish. Maybe all the fish are dead now, maybe the stream is full of toxic sludge, maybe this is all a bad dream.

The good news about the burn, if I can offer some of my two cents is that the lower level burns can offer some benefits to the ecosystems that depend on fire. Other areas, in what appears on this map to be mostly peaks and ridges, have been severely burned and now there is always the downfall of soil erosion, little vegetation, and increased stream runoff in many of these creeks. This will be a big deal to any aquatic communities living in these waters.

BAER maps always look pretty neat.

Any photos of the Eagle Creek campgrounds?

Is there anything that we can do to help the area recover in terms of volunteer work? Trail clearing, etc
