I'm terrible at this but it's something in the zucchini/ squash/ pumpkin/ gourd family. The leaf shape and twirly bits are indicative of the sort of vine thing you're dealing with. The fruit is not screaming anything in particular at me but I'm feeling some sort of squash thing.
Yeah cucurbits can cross pollinate to create all kinds of weird things. I have seen a cucumber & pumpkin cross, watermelon and cucumber etc. If the plants are near each other and cross pollinate you may get some weird thing.
It is a cucurbit of some sort.
I would guess at some sort of summer squash. It could be a random hybrid, any idea where the seed may have come from? like old squash/pumpkin/courgette that may have had seed in it left in the garden.
Cucurbitaceae
The Cucurbitaceae, also called cucurbits and the gourd family, are a plant family consisting of about 965 species in around 95 genera, the most important of which are:
Cucurbita – squash, pumpkin, zucchini, some gourds
Lagenaria – calabash, and others that are inedible
Citrullus – watermelon (C. lanatus, C. colocynthis) and others
Cucumis – cucumber (C. sativus), various melons
Luffa – the common name is also luffa, sometimes spelled loofah (when fully ripened, two species of this fibrous fruit are the source of the loofah scrubbing sponge)
The plants in this family are grown around the tropics and in temperate areas, where those with edible fruits were among the earliest cultivated plants both in the Old and New Worlds. The Cucurbitaceae family ranks among the highest of plant families for number and percentage of species used as human food.
The Cucurbitaceae consist of 98 proposed genera with 975 species, mainly in regions tropical and subtropical. All species are sensitive to frost.
