Ohio
The gulls circle glumly and the sky is committing suicide to escape the ground below
The nearest river cannot be seen but still I smell it burning in 1969
Years later my hands would make hinged steeples
that held many people
I didn't know enough to miss anything
I drew wings and beaks in the sand with twigs from faraway places
I lived vivid fantasies, imagined elaborate possibilities
I was happiest alone
I once caught a seagull with a fishing pole
The hook snagging the web of its foot and I reeled
It beat its wings
Some kind of cruel meat kite
I cut it lose and it flew off
It flew off and I stayed behind
