Feeling dead inside

This seems to be the cliche for sociopaths. What I'm curious about is what this deadness actually feels like.

Care to elaborate?

It's hard for psychopaths to find themselves because they have no one like minded to talk to. They probably don't want that either. So, they pretend to be someone else all day long. Spending zero time developping their own personality. Then it gets to the point where they may feel like they don't have one.

That's so far from my reality. It's not like I pretend to be someone else all day, it's just filling in the missing bits, like feigning a little empathy by mirroring facial expressions, or just setting a jovial tone so that empaths can copy/internalise the mood I'm trying to set. I consider that kind of activity my version of good manners. I like classical music. It's not like I pretend to be a hip hop aficionado all day long. FFS

I wouldn't say I feel dead inside most of the time. It's when I'm in bed, and have stopped thinking about stuff, and when I'm comfortable, that there is nothing. At that point there is virtually no significant thought, no significant sensation, and no significant feeling. It's just awareness and nothingness. I can't say it's unpleasant or pleasant... It's just empty, and time can seem to drag on for an eternity, or seemingly run really fast.

My life is dictated by two things. Caring about the masks i show other people and controlling my cravings. Neither the masks nor the cravings are a real person. So when i ask myself "who am i?" then i have no answer. I don't "feel" in the meaning of the word that i'm dead inside. I just think there is nothing.

So maybe it's only a matter of perception.

For me I wouldn't say I'm dead inside. It's just an absence of feelings. Like watching paint dry. You feel nothing about it. I feel that way at weddings, on most dates, watching the news when sad things are broadcasted, at parties. Very rarely do I get a feeling past stagnant boredom and even more rare does it last for longer than a few minutes. I remember feeling more alive I guess, when I was a little kid. But I don't feel bad now. I just feel borderline nothingness.

It's weird and difficult to explain. But for me personally, when I think, "what am I feeling right now?" all of a sudden while doing something mundane, I'd realise that I can't answer that question because I don't really feel anything. I'm not sure if it's like that for others, but that's just my experience with "emptiness".

It's like when you feel nothing. Not mad, sad, happy. Just a sort of calmness.

Exactly. As I see it, I feel more content than "dead". Like nothing can take me out of this state and I'm relaxed that really would take me forever to even get worked up over anything. So it would seem saying feeling "dead inside" is more a symptom of something else like depression instead of a symptom of sociopathy or psychopathy

There is no foreign influences affecting my state of mind. There is no nagging emotions that are trying to dictate how I think nor is there a burden of social expectations either. I am content with my reality because I lack any consideration of the opinions others may have of me. I simply do not care about you enough to use any of my energy trying to change myself for your happiness. Like someone claiming enlightenment, it is a calmness that cannot really be understood fully unless you experience it yourself. I doubt that was too helpful but you're welcome.

i feel kinda like flat lined, like nothing is happening unless i'm angry but event hen I still just feel nothing.

Like thatwayhome said, it’s more contentment. If I’m alone, I rarely feel content. I feel apathetic to everyone and everything.

To me it's not having a personality.

Everything I am is a tailored. facade.

It's pretty sad actually. I am Nothing.

No worries, no anxiety, no PTSD, no anything. It's nice. No unnecessary emotions. The emotions are there but they're like a faint radio static in the background. No need for antidepressants for there is no depression.

It's not like I'm actually dead on the inside but it's like I'm empty but still have everything I need to function; brain, heart, blood, etc. Rarely feel my emotions and empathy is nonexistent.

Everyone's replies so far are apt. It doesn't feel like anything. It's like there is a void. There is no emotion. There can be thoughts but they are fleeting. Nothing is interesting. Nothing is compelling. It's like being in a deprivation chamber, except it's for your emotions. It's a calm, peaceful quiet. No good. No bad. Things just are. The extreme boredom being the only everlasting companion to the nothingness.

I don't feel numb inside in terms of apathy.Because in apathy, you also can't feel emotions such as anger.Anger is the only emotion i feel the most and it can turn into a more agressive, expressive way most of the time even though i might channel it to a colder manner.Other than that i literally feel nothing.

I can't speak for anyone but myself, but here's an perspective for all its worth.

I see a lot of people strive for long term goals. They stress over them, they work countless hours when no one is looking, they hone their skills and networks daily.

I have these ambitions, fleetingly. For example I took up music a few years ago with the grandiose hope of 'making it' not because I really wanted to be a musician but because it fed my ego and it was a mould I wanted to pour myself into as I felt it fitted my druggy, loner personality. I got pretty good quickly because I have an obsessive personality, but I gave up just as soon as the hard work came in.

See I don't really particularly want anything. Call it adrenaline, dopamine, serotonin, whatever you like is the only thing that seems to really drive me.

I have a very shallow effect, so even though I am ambitious, my efforts bring me little to sometimes no biological rewards.

When the drugs are done, the risky activity over, when my new found grandiose past time has given me all the good brain chemicals I can draw from it, I'm left with nothing.

I can't form long term relationships that don't benefit me directly in a very vast and varied way, so I don't benefit from them at all, my lack of forward thinking and generally irrationality and irritability take away any long term commitments to bettering myself and my lack of empathy for everyone including myself stops me from progressing socially.

But when all is said and done, as much as I could tell the story of my life as a heart wrenching tale of unfortunate events... I caused most of them myself. Some on purpose some, some as the side result of some other malicious action.

Tldr; feeling dead inside is a chemical problem not an emotional one

I like the way your wrote this. It echos around long after reading.

"When the drugs are done, the risky activity over, when my new found grandiose past time has given me all the good brain chemicals I can draw from it, I'm left with nothing."

I feel like I could have written this but would follow with: and I have to start all over again.

A hollow hunger. You want to feel like everyone else. Not because it's beautiful or amazing, but because you feel like you're missing out on some big component of life, and you deserve to experience it. The only thing I've ever seen really light up the emotion kiln is anger.
