Harmon Kardon 3600 to a new Sony 1080? Downgrade or upgrade?

Buying Advice US

Hey guys,

I'm learning the ropes here, bare with me. Have an older Harman Kardon 3600. If i went to something more modern is it an upgrade? I'm looking at the Sony 1080 from Best Buy ($100 off). Am i crazy to trade in my Harmon for it? If i was to get a new receiver that would be the price point approved from the wife. Would it be worth it for me to pick one up? Or is it best to stay with what i have?

Thanks for any help! Currently have some lower end Martin Logan speakers (10's, and 2).

Denon, Marantz, and Yamaha would be the brands you want to look at. (Marantz is the parent company of Denon, so there's some overlap in technology.)

Typically, if a manufacturer is known more for making TVs and the like (such as Sony) it'd be best to stay away from their audio lineup. Harmon group has a handle on the "lifestyle" niche where things look nice, but aren't all that well known for manufacturing or longevity.

If price is the primary concern, take a look at accessories4less

The current winner over there is the x1300 from Denon - 4k, atmos and all that. Accessories4less does refurbs, so you get a 1 year warranty on it.

Sorry if the answer comes a little bit late, but according to What Hi-FI ( https://www.whathifi.com/awards/2017/home-cinema-amplifiers ), the Sony 1080 is the best (EDIT: home cinema) AV receiver under 1000 dollars you can get this year. The next step up they recommend is the Denon AVR-X6400H which costs upwards of 2000$.

(Also, the Sony is also compatible with Dolby Vision since its software was updated at the end of september).
