Streaming IRL at a convention?

Question [Resolved]

Is it against any Twitch TOS to stream live from a convention like DreamHack? My viewers are asking me to do it today as I walk the con floor but of course don't want to do something illegal.

Edit: Thanks all, I won't be live streaming from any convention. I appreciate the quick responses!

I dont know of any conventions that permits livestreaming as a default.
You would have to get permission from the venue.

well depends on the definition of the convention.

for instance the gamescon in germany, its mostly a consumer convention, where game devs/studios/publishers promote new games. everyone can livestream, except certain areas, which are mostly backstage or private areas, which are not available to the public.

dreamhack is similar like a LAN Party in 1st place. if you ever went to a dreamhack, you will see thousands of ppl livestreaming from the events. it's promotional for the event.

now if you have a business convention with panels and talks it's different, because the streamed content is like the product of the convention and they don't want people to stream it for free to other people.

it really depends on the convention.

Broadly speaking, it's not against Twitch ToS to stream live events IRL. However, if the event itself doesn't allow streaming then Twitch ToS covers that and it does become against the ToS (basically it says 'Streaming without permission is prohibited').

Secondly, you need to consider privacy laws. There are laws and regulations in place in most countries about recording (and either by extention or explicitly streaming) in what is legally a 'public area' (even if you need to buy a ticket to get in). Be sure to be aware of the specific rules in your country / area.

Furthermore don't strive to take it as far as you can. Instead try to be on the safe side so to not get in trouble yourself and not get reactionary legislation from the government that will hurt everybody in the long run because it blew up.

Lastly, consider how you, your friends, your family and acquaintances would feel being recorded by a random person just becfause it's an event. Think about keeping a reasonable distance from people as to both not be in their face and, if possible, not have them super easily recognizable on screen.

Twitch ToS states you should respect the rules in place (whether the laws or set by the owners or organizers). If they give the thumbs up, then you're good.

you should ask the organisers if it is okay not us.

Not sure how TwitchCon does it but I've been to other events and convention gathering where your lanyard colour (you choose) determines wether you wish to be filmed or photographed. It's the obligation of staff and attendees to abide by those rules. Do not videotape or photograph someone who opted out.

If TwitchCon does not have this, they should adopt that.

I can only imagine that's why there might be an issue here.

honestly for anyone going to twitchcon, you should be expected to be on camera at some point.

I don't know. I was looking at that other sub that has Twitch clips and some of those IRL bigger names are way out of hand. I think after Twitch Con, the powers that be really need to take a long hard look at what's going on in IRL, and I am not talking about the T&A streams. Content based on the harassment and humiliation of others, starting fights with random people, etc. all in the name of views needs to not be a thing anymore.

Conventions usually do not want streaming at conventions unless you have a media pass. Usually this falls under the convention in questions TOS. :)

Where even is the option to broadcast in the IRL section? I haven't been able to figure it out on PC and feel like an idiot.

I know that on mobile, if you click the camera icon next to the section on your profile where you can post an update, it sets it up for an IRL stream. I found that out by mistake, thinking I would just post a video update. Not sure on PC.
