The Nostalgia Haikus
I.
empty coke bottles
letting light weave through glass shells
a child’s short summer
branches lay across
the hazy creek’s surface
it needed a bridge
trails of tiny lights
turn all houses into dreams
christmas has arrived
II.
canoes do race too
steady, barreling over ponds
broom for a paddle
to spell is to know
breath wavers with each letter
repeat the word, please
it is safer to
simply stay in the audience
no talents for show
III.
my father’s guitar
gave summer its melody
lilting and silly songs
ghost crabs scurry quick
bodies lit by grey moonlight
can sands be haunted
childhood escaped
cracked clean like a beer bottle
kicked under a car
IV.
driving at sixteen
world was mine for a moment
but I took too much
nostalgia can kill
years painted in one brushstroke
or a couple of words
mind combs for pictures
clearer than those that remain
but returns empty
