I just want to chime in that I love this channel. There's something about the reviewer and the games he chooses that just makes his videos a ton of fun to watch.

I like how he's not over the top and doesn't shove a "recommendation or bollocks" gimmick

Loved dead space 2. I believe it launched around February sometime.

The last 2 rooms of constantly respawing enemies + the one neceomorph that wouldn't die was a cruel end to the game just before the final fight and cut scene.

Still a worth while game for £5 if you can pick it up, defiantly recommend It!

I actually replayed the game a couple days ago on Zealot mode, i literally had to sold everything from my inventory and some weapons to fully upgrade the force gun and a hundred of ammo packs for those 2 rooms, cruel indeed and fuck the regenerator.

The force gun and the laser cutter are the only thing you will ever need.

All the games are best on hardest, only time it really feels like survival horror and not just a shooter with jumpscares

I hated this part. I actually used god mode to get through it. And all because right before this 2 rooms, you have to clear several rooms of human enemies that drain all your ammo. And if remember correctly, after the labyrinth of spawning enemies you have to fight some enemies in your hallucinations which is, again, tedious since you have no ammo.

My bad, somehow i remembered last stage mutants as human enemies.

I personally really disliked it compared to the first one, it had very little of the tension and "passive fear", the jump-scares were increased and there were just a lot of plotpoints and useless shit.

For example you never get to finish/kill the Pregnant-boss in the temple... She just leaves and then you never see her again.

Your ex just isn't scary, it feels like what a 14 year old would write as edgy scare-tactics.

Lastly they do a fundamentally flawed thing in explaining to much about the monsters etc., fear of the unknown and unexplained is always what makes our brains go haywire... The moment we know why something is a flesh-eating monster well then it's just another "enemy" and not truly a unknown monstrosity.

It's still a good game and worth buying, but sadly shows the "mainstream" adapting that eventually killed the series

This game will forever get props for putting fucking raptors in the game. Predictable sure but a fun challenge at first

That was so awesome the first time it happened. God damn I need to replay these games.

From a gameplay perspective... the controls and combat felt a lot smoother and more actiony, and that's generally a good thing.

But man... it just lost all the tension and scariness of the first game. And for a survival horror game, that's just a big big hit. Why play a scary game if it's just going to be a lot of action that isn't scary?

Plus, the story was completely jumbled and didn't make much sense to me.

"Hey Ellie, go find that crazy deranged guy and take him with you. For some reason."

"Oh man, that crazy deranged guy went and attacked you? Shit, who could have guessed? My bad."

So overall... I think it was a step backward for the franchise.

It definitely wasn't as scary as the first game but it had it's moments. The first time you meet those charging guys comes to mind. Probably one of my favorite moments of the game there.

Delta_Assault•

Yeah, it was neat to revisit the Ishimura. Had some nice spooky callbacks there.

But it was scattered moments. While the first game had this whole atmosphere of horror throughout.

As I understand it, it wasn't meant to be in the same vein as the first game. Kind of like how Aliens is different than Alien. The first game is survival horror as an out of your depth civilian engineer, but in the second you are grizzled survivor with more than a few mental scars. You tell everyone around you that things will get bad and they aren't ready for it but they think you are overreacting. Surprise surprise, you were right, and now you find you in the middle of a melting pot of nightmare and chaos again, just like Ripley was.

Delta_Assault•

Huh. Well, okay.

I dunno, I enjoyed Dead Space as a survival horror franchise. If I want to play a great action game, I'll just go and play... Doom 2016 or something. Seems a waste to turn Dead Space into that sorta thing.

OG_Shadowknight•

Yea I understand. The way I see it is it's a continuation of the character of Isaac and exploring a bit more of the DS universe, and how woefully unprepared humanity is for the necromorph threat.

Resident Evil was scary from 1 to 3. Earlier Alone in the Dark games too. What happens is that sequels to more modern AAA horror games tend to go to a more action-oriented route as a means to appeal to a wider audience.

water1111•

RE 2 is literally Dead Space 2 in the 90s, bigger, better, more action basesd focused then survival horror, you will never have a problem with ammo unlike RE1.

victimOfNirvana•

We might have played different games. The only one of the three in which I didn't have much problem with ammo was 3, and that's because someone told me to save as much as possible because the final sequence was terribly hard. I fleed from every enemy when possible and in the end it was just a few magnum shots. Granted, I was never able to finish RE1.

I... disagree. I mean it wasn't as constantly tense, but like the video notes, it goes from 0 to 11 whenever the fuck it wants to. Like the church the first time you meet the chargers... eugh. Gives me shivers just thinking about it.

I am a bit surprised how positive he was. I never got around to Dead Space 2 but I loved the first one, played the hell out of it. But I remember mediocre reviews and many of my friends said it was pretty much an action flick. I can totally see where they are coming from here but it seems like it have redeeming qualities also.

2 is pretty much Aliens to the first's Alien. The action comes into the foreground, but the game doesn't suffer from it at all, IMO. Found the pacing to be a lot tighter than the first, and the action set pieces are really well done.

In dead space 2 you go back to the ishmura. PTSD kicks in. It's awesome lol

7
pewpewkichu•

Mediocre reviews? Didn't it get incredibly good reviews? It's among the highest rated games on Metacritic of that year for every platform it released to.

5
Reutermo•

It was so long ago, but that was my memory of it. Back then I didn't really hang out on English speaking sites, and I am pretty sure that it was criticized in the biggest Swedish gaming magazine that I followed back then, especially how Isaac had been turned into a classic Action hero.

And damn, I checked out 2011 in gaming. That was a big year. Skyrim, Dragon Age 2, Witcher 2, Bastion, Portal 2, Arkham City, Dark Souls, Human Revolution, Uncharted 3, La Noire, Skyward Sword and Catherine. I played and liked all of the above games, I totally get why I never got around to Dead Space 2.

Loved that game. It’s my favorite horror game ever made. Horrifying atmosphere and scares, terrifying monsters, and a great story arc for Isaac and Ellie (something sorely lacking from the first game)

It’s one of my favorites

I'm keen to see him review Dead Space 3, and hopefully talk about the coop missions, where one player sees different things, since that's gotta be my favourite coop aspect of any game, player 1 seeing just space coffins and junk, and player 2 seeing huge presents, giant toy soldiers, and happy birthday banners.

3
chaosfire235•

Nice to see someone else was just as unnerved by the Stalkers as I was. Fucking corpses raptors freaked me out every time.
