The GAMING KING - Audio Technica AD1000X
Well, it's been a long time since I've found a headphone that possessed a characteristic(s) unique and good enough worth keeping alongside my trusty HD600. And that headphone came in the mail TODAY! ^ ^
I bought these headphones(along with DT880 and DT990) specifically for their spatial/positional audio excellence, according to the research I did on them, and boy did I find gold. The DT's were better than my HD600 for sure, but putting the 1000X on was like taking the headphones OFF, and stepping INTO the damn game(!!!). Sure, they lack bass, flatness, and that gorgeous natural timbre of the HD600; but are you really going to cry about that with a $270 headphone..?! ._. Every game, movie, and song you've ever played/seen/heard is new again. Talk about value! (Sure, the AD2000X might be a touch better, but it's $580, and the HD800 may be twice as good(or might not), but it's $1500...and needs a serious DAC and amp to match....)
If the 1000X = 100% sound accuracy in games, then I would rate the HD600 at about 10%, and the DT's maybe 50-60%(and "artifical" sounding). They're THAT good... And I'm not using anything special; just an Essence STX soundcard(with a Modi Multibit and Jotunheim on the way to hopefully improve my source audio, finally <3). With my HD600, I thought that HRTF audio was something super special and game-changing to have; now, with the 1000X, I can actually see how it worsens sound quality by muting how far away things sound(distances).
The only complaint I have is that your ears constantly touch/rest on the inner driver foam, which is annoying and worth docking a few points for comfort. Otherwise, you put these headphones on(no special amp or DAC needed, folks), and you are THERE inside that game like you've NEVER been/heard before! I guarantee it.
So there you have it. What are you waiting for? GO BUY IT, NOW. And wonder why all of these pro FPS players aren't using them, and why you never see OPEN headphones like these in tournaments(??!?!?!).
Boom. Done.
