Using windows formatted HDD on Mac

Hello everyone! I have a 1TB hard drive which I was using on my windows before I got the Mac, and what I didn’t know is that the hard drive has to be re-formatted to be used on the Mac, Now the problem that arises is that the stuff in the Hard drive is over 400gb and my MacBook 15” is 256gb (2017 Model) I can however dump the files on my windows and format the Hard drive on the Mac. But will I be able to put stuff back to my hard drive? And even if that’s possible, the copy time from hard drive to windows is about 3-4 hours. Is there any way I can use the Hard drive without re-formatting it?
