Am I [29F] paranoid or is my husband [32M] irrational in opening the door wide open at 3 AM?
My husband Bart and I live in some developing suburbs of a semi-rural area close to a major city. Bart and I have a dog that although she is a great alarm dog, she can be a little skittish and will bark if she sees so much as a leaf fall on the floor too forcefully. Lately, our dog has been barking at night at what I imagine are outdoor cats or trash pandas roaming around our property.
Bart and I are night owls, sometimes we will not go to bed until 5 AM and the dog has as such, adapted to our schedule. Bart has developed a habit of opening the door wide open so the dog can see what she is so worked up about through the glass door and leave it be. The problem is that he will do this at the latest hours of the night.
Although our area is relatively safe, there has been a small uptick in night time break ins and as a near lifelong city dweller, I am really weary of having Bart opening the door at 3 AM. Chances are...no, there is nothing there but I feel it is common sense to not leave the door ajar this late in the night much less OPEN IT at hearing rustling outside. Bart thinks there is nothing wrong with this and am being overly paranoid and I admit to an extent that I am. Bart has lived in semi rural small towns all of his life and I grew up in the city. The last time someone approached my house at 3 AM, it was a homeless man that had been hit by a vehicle at a nearby intersection and when he couldn't strong arm his way inside my house, he slept in the back of my unlocked car in the carport. Bart says I am being irrational and that this will not happen every time he should open the door past midnight. I say that it doesn't matter, the fact that he does it seriously terrifies me and he shouldn't do it at all when it's late. Am I being an overly cautious city mouse or is my husband being lackadaisical about our home safety?
tl;dr: My husband opens and leaves front door wide open late at night to calm down our dog, we disagree wildly about how safe this actually is.
