Is the "buy after WL and sell before WL" method not successful this year?

Players prices this year do not seem to be dependent on WL that much. The prices are more tied to SBCs, hype, big Youtubers recommending specific methods, promo packs, anticipation of events. Is the method not working because not a lot of people are playing WL still since the game is in its early stage and because theres the Sunday SB rewards addition this year.
