Any tips for call of misery vanilla?

I tried looking online but all I found was tips for call of pripyat's misery mod and Com is not the exact same as misery for cop. The thing I'm struggling with the most is money and food as the only food I seem to be finding is radiated and afterwards I have to smoke a lot in order to become non irradiated and then about 10 minutes later I'm hungry again, even traders don't seem to be selling normal food and when they do they charge nearly a thousand RU for a tin of baked beans. I also can't really find a medkit anywhere either and I've had a slither of health for a while now so anyone with experience with call of misery please tell me how I can get out of this mega hobo phase.
