Instantaneous coughing using a bong

So today I was taking quite a fat hit from a bong and it was going well, herb was burning all the way through and bong was filled completely with smoke. As I was about to fully clear it, I released my thumb from the carb hole and inhaled as sharply as I could but the moment I did that I coughed extremely hard. I was spitting out resin and kept on coughing. Does anyone know why this happened or how I can prevent it? Was it too much of a big hit for me or did I do something wrong?
