This guide does not end in you playing the game, however it is a step in the right direction. This guide will tell you how to make the BFH server version 1.42.217478 work without immediately crashing. Proof

First you need a copy of the server files. I'm not going to link them, but if you google "BFH server files download" its pretty easy to find a download. Unpack the contents of the downloaded RAR into a folder.

The folder contains an executable called "BFHeroes_w32ded.exe". This is the server executable. Running this should start the server. Except it doesn't. Why? The server performs a check at startup to verify whether or not you are allowed to run this server. The check fails, so the program immediately exits. Fortunately, this is fairly easy to circumvent. All we need to do is change 1 byte in the file.

Download HxD (or another hex-editor of your choice). Open "BFHeroes_w32ded.exe" in HxD and press ctrl-f. Under "Search for", enter 7D 0E 83 F8 FB 0F. Change the datatype to "Hex-values". After pressing OK it should look something like this. Change the "7D" to "7C" so it looks like this. Save the file and exit HxD. You should now be able to start the server simply by running the modified BFHeroes_w32ded.exe
