I (f/34) have a girlfriend (32) who often makes comments when I order food at restaurants. How do I talk to her about this?
I love food. I've also started to work out and get more fit. I'm in a really good place right now. I know that this friend has struggled a bit with her weight but is now on a good path. Neither of us is overweight, just untoned recently.
Anyway, on 2 different occasions while ordering food at a restaurant, she's said "WHOA, you're getting ALL of THAT?!" and/or "WHOA! that's a LOT of food!"
I was so shocked, at the time I was like "HEY! Stop food shaming me!!" in a playful way, and she made a face and got a bit defensive, not knowing what I was talking about. I just feel like those comments are unnecessary and through them she's projecting her own issues with food and about her weight onto me. None of my other girlfriends would ever make a comment like that. What's funny is that this friend will inhale pizza and fries after a night out at 2am and I will stay quiet. It's not my style to comment or judge.
She's gotten mad and talked to me (sometimes in a more aggressive or passive-aggressive manner) when she's perceived me to be negative.
How do I bring this up to her? Any suggestions on how I can relay it without sounding over sensitive. I feel like it would be a weird thing to bring up out of nowhere. thoughts? Am I being over-sensitive? I'm thinking of pre=emptively saying "I've been apprehensive about eating/dining with you because I feel like you've made judgey comments about the food I've ordered and eaten. Is everything ok?" I also don't want to come off sounding patronizing.
tl;dr: A friend (f/32) of mine (f/34) often makes comments like "Whoa! That's a lot of food!" or "you're getting all of THAT?!" when I order. I playfully told her not to food shame me but she's since done it again. Lately I've gotten into good shape and she's working on herself. How do I bring this up to her?
