cost investment vs return for 'serious' mapping

Fluff

I did a set of shaped spider forest and broke down the cost and reward, I did it like so:

alch maps for pack size or more magic/rare mobs

breach

two yellow sextant and one white sextant

I got two nice drops: a master sextant (7c or so) and a divine (19c). with those, I made a profit, but without the divine i would have actually lost money due to the cost of journeyman sextants.

not a huge sample size overall and maybe i got unlucky, coulda gotten more. but also could've gotten less.

im naturally pretty risk averse so it feelsbadman, and im just wondering.

20% chisel - alch and scour/chaos for double pack size - sextants (rerolling bad ones, which can add 4+c to the cost of the map per sextant) and then breach is 6c. that really adds up. but im wondering if really "going for it" is rewarding enough to be worth it? like are we looking at it in terms of "yeah you're going to be spending on average 10c per map but with the right rolls you're making 15+ in raw currency plus chance of 5c+ drops" or is it pretty much the kind of thing you have to have a gambler's mindset about?

or maybe it's worth doing in hardcore or temp leagues and not so much in standard.

or maybe people are assuming they're going to make a lot of extra maps (spider forest=6c in std) than they run, and profit like that. personally i got two back in all my runs. variance, yeah, but its not reliable is the point.

just not sure how to do it optimally, and even if it is optimal, what is the risk profile? are you gonna have sets of 100+ maps where you lose $, break even, or profit only very slightly, and then hold out for that Doctor drops to make it up?

Also i run windripper and bisco's. considering going full mf with garabe iiq uniques and running item quantity. i watched a guy running Vault and it seemed he averaged 1 Hoarder every single run (out of 30) and got Abandoned Wealth 1:10 or so.

never really messed with 'serious' farming before, im the kind of person who likes to turn off the brain.i farmed a headhunter from scratch basically by just playing super suboptimally (chaos recipe, picking up and selling rares for alts) back when they cost 127 exalt if that's any indication of what a cazul i am. just wondering what kind of profit i could be making if i set things up more thoughtfully and have a better idea of what i stand to gain vs lose.
