how to handle sms when you update phones

moving from moto x pure to moto z play. i usually backup using sms backup and move it over to the new phone. my backup recently is 1.3gb.. so should i "start fresh" by just not moving the texts? i'm using the google messages app for texting and there's no settings for delete old texts after a certain amount. does anyone archive and backup old texts?
