Is it common to have the nmom initiate cutting off contact? [advice]
Therapy hasn’t been going well. Each session, she leaves the room retaining only being told how wrong she’s been in the past. My goal, stated over and over, is to learn to have smoother conversations when I see her every two weeks (mani + optional dinner) .
Instead of hearing me say “because of [gently but directly worded] thing that happened in the past, I get triggered when you say [similar thing] in our conversations over dinner”, she hears “I am unfairly stewing about small mistakes you’ve made 20 years ago and attacking you out of disrespect and cruelty”.
I feel like a caring mother would see this as, yes, a painful process, maybe very painful. Nmom is now stating that she’s ready to cut off even the bimonthly visits because those boundaries are me “controlling her like a marionette”. Caring mothers wouldn’t see voicing ways to improve the relationship in therapy as an unpardonable offense.
Last night she gave this lovely quip: “I raised you through your teenage years and I still love you. If that’s not unconditional love, I don’t know what is.”
That is not a statement indicative of unconditional love.
In reality, I was a good kid overall, if sulky and combative. I’m not sorry for having been a standard teenager. A caring parent simply getting through tough teen years does not make them question their love for their child.
So she wants to quit therapy and to stop seeing or talking to each other until I’ve worked out my issues on my own and ready to grovel since she is totally blameless.
Anyhow, my question: Is this common? I read about the extreme lengths parents go to find you all after NC. I’ve got a wedding and trying for kids fast approaching. Do nmoms commonly peace out like this?
