Light Leveling Help

After playing the campaign on PC and reading posts about what to do and what not to do when trying to get to max light level, I realized I may have stuffed my chances of getting to 305 up big time. Should I just continue on my character (233 Titan atm) Or give up and remake it? As a new player to Destiny, I didn't realize a lot of things when it came to engrams and whatnot and I'm worried that I won't be able to break past the soft cap. Thanks :P
