Let's Sim / Future Game Shop dodgy data dealings
Sparked by the X-Plane.org data breach, Let's Sim put out a facebook post about how great their security was.
It got me thinking, I've been receiving emails from Let's Sim (formerly Future Game Shop) for the last two years despite never making an account with them, it started on 24/01/16 and was a general marketing email. I went back on their facebook page and their first post was only a few days prior to this.
I figured they probably bought my details from an X-Plane store or something but I ran across a comparison table on their site of their benefits over both X-Plane.org and X-Aviation which I thought was a little odd if they'd bought the data from there (the only X-Plane specific places I was registered at the time). I checked out privacy policy of all three places, all three say they do not sell or share.
Here is the one from let's sim. Pretty passionate about your privacy and data right? So I thought I'd reach out to them and ask where they got it, quite a simple question they should be happy to answer. They don't post any phone number or contact details on their site except a support ticket and a home address which is a 4 hour drive away and I don't quite fancy doing. So, facebook it is. Their facebook page has a "typically responds in an hour" thing which you need to be pretty consistent to get and respond to all messages and is generally an indicator they are very accessible.
So I left a comment on their post and also messaged them the same:
Speaking of data, from where exactly did you and your previous "future game shop" get my email address? I've been receiving them for months and yet I never made an account with you or your previous site.
I received an instant automatic response.
Thank you for your message, we will be in contact with you shortly. This is an automatic message.
K, cool, all fine, I'll just wait for them to get back to me.
However, they never did get back to me. Instead I no longer have access to their page and the chat history is now with "Facebook user" and the placeholder avatar. From my perspective they no longer exist.
So two things could've happened here:
-
They closed their page. If so, why? This is unlikely.
-
They blocked me. If so, why? Maybe they didn't come across my data legitimately after all.
Thoughts and input appreciated here folks.
