I[19F] met someone online [19M] and we're really compatible but I'm not sure if I should get too attached

So, I met a guy on reddit, he's really nice and we're very compatible, but he's like in a different country altogether. I have depression, and am currently on a gap semester but gonna head back to college soon, and even though I took time to get better, a whole bunch of things happened that are pulling me back down. This guy is genuinely helping me feel happy and smile, which is something I haven't been able to do for a long time. The problem is of course, the distance. I'm not sure if I should try and make this work(I really want to) or not get too attached before things get worse and go wrong. Have any of you been in a similar situation, and if you planned to make it work, was it worth it? I'm just nervous, I don't want my heartbroken again. (throwaway because obv he knows my reddit account)
