TIFU by liking Black Sabbath

M

I initially posted this only in r/Japan as it requires some knowledge of Japanese and Japanese history to fully understand my fuck up, but I will also share the story to this sub with some additional explanation. Obligatory it didn't happen today.

I came to Japan for college, and when I was in junior year, I wanted to "make the world a better place", as many idealistic college students do.

I wanted to work to create social equality, and came across an NGO called IMADR, which stands for International Movement Against all forms of Discrimination and Racism. It seemed like my dream internship, so I did some more research about the organization, printed out my CV, and barged in the doors of IMADR.

Although they were a bit flustered to see a random student come in and ask for an internship, they were nice enough to look through my CV and I got an interview in Japanese.

It was my third year of having learned Japanese, so I still made mistakes in my Japanese every now and then, but I was still able to talk about my background, why I was interested in social equality and the organization, as well as my knowledge of racism in Japanese society.

After talking about racism for about 30 minutes, they suddenly asked if I knew Black Sabbath (ブラック・サバスはご存知ですか). ^Note: ^Black ^Sabbath ^is ^pronounced ^buraku ^sabasu ^in ^Japanese.

Although I was extremely confused as to why they would suddenly ask about my musical knowledge and why that would impact their decision in their hiring process, I replied, "Of course I know Black Sabbath! I think they're the best." (もちろん知ってます。最高ですよね!), having dabbled in hard rock/heavy metal during high school.

The interviewer's face showed a mix of confusion and anger, and after a couple more questions, I was rushed out the door.

After I walked about 10 steps from the doors of my dream internship, it hit me. Of course they weren't asking about Black Sabbath the band. They were asking about buraku sabetsu (部落差別), discrimination against the burakumin, who are ostracized and discriminated against in Japanese society.

So I had barged into an NGO that stands against all forms of discrimination and racism to ask for an interview, and proudly announced that I thought discrimination against the burakumin was 'the best'.

And no, I didn't get the internship.

TL;DR - During an interview for an internship for an NGO against racism, misheard the interview question about buraku sabetsu (部落差別) to be one about Black Sabbath (pronounced buraku sabasu in Japanese), and proudly replied that I think it's awesome. I didn't get the internship.
