Musings of a Destiny first-timer on PC
I've kept up with the general happenings of Destiny over the past 3-4 years while pining for a potential eventual release on PC, and here we are. I've hit 265 Light (I still prefer the idea of calling it "Light level" than power) on my first character, here are my thoughts.
Positives:
-
Game looks, runs and sounds like a dream. The sci-fi fantasy aesthetic/art-style is gorgeous and the guns sound weighty and crisp.
-
Moment to moment gameplay remains fun even if repetitive
-
Strikes are enjoyable bite-sized PvE experiences.
-
Roaming zones with a fireteam doing public events together is a mellow good time
Negatives
-
Coming off other RPGs/MMOs on PC, a lot of things feel neutered/missing
-
The story got a resounding: "...That's it?" out of me. After following the heels of Destiny lore for the past 3-4 years, it was a big disappointment. I've got a big list of problems regarding the campaign but this is getting lengthy already.
-
Writing in the dialogue throughout the campaign is mediocre at best. Funny because a lot of the lore tabs have really good writing in them.
-
Lack of regular pug matchmaking for Nightfalls (and presumably for raids as well?)
-
No "all chat" or "shout chat". There are times where a public event is empty and I wished I could just put out a call into chat for some backup.
-
Tokens as a primary loot acquisition system feels awful.
-
Horizontal progression feels stiflingly limited. I was really hoping/looking forward to perk trees and random perk rolls on weapons ala Destiny 1.
-
Legendary Armour being effectively all cosmetic is boring as all hell. There's no point to collecting all the sets outside of simply hoarding them for collection purposes.
-
Vault space is pathetically small given the collectathon nature of the game as it is. Given fixed rolls on all gear, I don't see why Legendary Gear doesn't go into the Collection tab.
-
Stats are annoyingly nebulous (particularly in regards to mods) having no clear numbered values.
-
Exotics (particular armour) are disappointingly boring, alongside being way too common, yet also irritating given most of your exotics are coming from engrams (aka praying to RNG-sus).
-
Crucible is hot garbage coming off my last, and arguably all time favourite multiplayer shooter; Titanfall 2. There are so many little problems here and there I have about it. It can be fun in short bursts, but overall the more I play Crucible, the more frustrated I'm becoming.
-
I feel like I'm handicapping myself playing Hunter
Having fun overall despite the issues. I've heard good things about the Live team so hopefully they can pull through with the changes/fixes in a timely manner. But until then, I remain only tentatively excited about the future, and hopefully I don't burn out too soon.
