Lag Spike/Micro stutter Troubleshooting
I've read a lot of posts on the official forum, and also some gamer articles, about the problem of having lag spikes and/or micro stutters in F1 2017.
Haven't had them myself, until i started league racing. Somewhere between 4 times per race to 7 times a lap, i get lag spikes. It only happens in online games and i have never noticed it in career.
The lag spikes can be described as the car/game freezing (which means staying still on the current position on the track) for about 0.2 to 0.5 seconds. As you might imagine, this is terrible especially in corners, but ultimately when driving in front of someone, because you might end up "inside" the other driver while the game tries to ghost your car.
I might have fixed my own troubles, and i wanted to share with you people of what i went through and why. I hope that others might share their lag spike/micro stutter problems and solutions, as it is a pretty big deal. My last two online races on 50 % haven't had a single micro stutter after i did some things to counter the issue.
My setup:
i5 4590
GTX 1060 - 6 GB Edition
16 GB ram
F1 2017 installed on a SSD
Windows 10 Fall Creators Update
Troubleshooting: Go through the list, and continue if problem persists. It's prioritized accordingly to which steps have the highest chance of fixing the problem.
Things to try in prioritized order (what i did to fix the issue):
-
Use 100 % Windows Desktop scaling
-
Desktop and Ingame resolution identical
-
Disable Nvidia Experience overlay
-
Uninstall Nvidia Experience
-
Revert to Nvidia GPU Driver 382.33 - this is optional. I updated my drivers to the latest 388 yesterday, to see if this step is irrelevant, and up until now, i still haven't had a lag spike. I will keep you updated about this step, and remove it, if i find it obsolete.
Things to consider, but might not have an effect (haven't tried these myself):
-
Cap FPS to 60
-
Close monitoring software programs (Afterburner etc.)
-
Lower Vehicle Reflection graphical setting
-
Remove Camera Shake in camera options
General advice:
-
For minimal input lag, always use "Fullscreen" mode instead of any available Windowed or Windowed-Fullscreen mode.
-
Windows high performance power profile might help with fps minimums (1 % and 0.1 %) when gaming. I made a lightweight program in .NET (WPF tray icon - no gui) that automatically changes the power profile to high performance if you are gaming, and back to balanced when on the desktop - if anyone is interested, feel free to PM me. I'm willing to show the source code for those who are paranoid of unknown programs.
-
Use default pre-rendered frames in this game. Setting it to "1" helps input lag a lot in first person shooters (PUBG, CS etc), but if you are having stuttering problems and fps issues, keep this value at default, which is 3 in many cases.
-
Keep drivers up to date (if the driver itself is not your suspect).
