What does Late Visitors Pompeii by Carel Willink mean?
I can't upload it for some reason, but it's not very hard to find it online. I'm having a hard time, however, finding meaningful interpretations. I know he labelled himself as a magic realist, but is the painting just that? Two foreign realistic realities blended together for the baffle and bemusement factor? Did he mean to show they're not as foreign as one might think, the modern civilization of his time and the ancient Romans? Or maybe that every civilization has its demise by painting Pompeii's volcano in the background and surrounding the dressy men with the city's ruins?
