Are block timings more varied now?

Is there greater variance in the rate at which blocks are mined currently? I've been watching the last couple days, and it seems like blocks sometimes take a long time (like 70 minutes) to mine, and sometimes 3-5 minutes.

Can anyone speak to this? Is the variance greater than it was in the past? Any explanations as to why?

Edit: To clarify, I'm referring to the BTC chain.
