How does Switch automatically detect the hub and change the mode to half-duplex?

If I connect the switch and hub, switch automatically detects the hub which is half-duplex, and change its mode to half-duplex. I am just wondering how switch detects it? Does switch detect it through electrical signal or are there some protocols involved?
