Is 10 days too late for a rabies vaccination?

9 days ago I was scratched by a dog who was apparently vaccinated, so the local doctor I went to said it'd be alright as long as the dog was put under observation and didn't die or anything. BUT I came to know that the dog showed some symptoms and died yesterday. I'm panicking now. I obviously understand that it's better to take the shots as early as possible, and I will get my first in a couple hours. Is it alright now? Please don't tell me it's a pointless question, because I just want to know the truth!
