How do you prevent wood from rotting?

Hey there, for a project I'm working on I have gathered quite a bit of sticks in the dunes. I'm afraid however that the wood will rot and other stuff like fungus is going to grow on it. Is there any way to coat the wood whilst keeping the bark on it?
