question about my business

I am a co-owner of a small (but long standing and very stable) engineering business. We have ~10 long term employees and business is going extremely well.

Outside of work the majority of us invest/trade, and have been doing quite well for ourselves in that respect.

The guys and I have been talking and we want to slow down a bit on the engineering side of things and use our collective resources to grow the cash the company is sitting on.

My main question is, at face value, does this sound legal? Will we need to get any extra licensing or any of that crap if we are not investing other people's money? What are taxes like on capital gains for a business? I don't have a framework set up yet, but the idea is that employees will get salaries and performance based bonuses.

It's just an idea at this stage, so I'm loosely planning... will talk to a lawyer at a later stage.
