Matching aftershaves to soaps in general
So as a new wetshaver, I'm still trying to not get overwhelmed by the many options of products available. One thing that I've remained pretty baffled on, even as I've learned things, is aftershave. From my (newbie) perspective, the situation seems that, if you use an aftershave, it will (mostly) overpower the smell of the original soap. So if you like the smell of a particular soap, you always have to have that matching aftershave. This gets, as I'm sure you all know, pretty pricey as things progress.
I have seen some topics about more "general" aftershaves, which go well with a variety of soaps. Some people asserted that they could still smell the original soaps beneath these, some were silent on that point. After considering the dilemma before me, I devised 3 possible routes I could take as I proceeded down this dark and wallet-draining hobby.
So what's your process for working with as many scents as you like to use, and why did you choose it? Is the soap scent a temporary pleasure, which later gets significantly altered (or replaced) by the addition of a single or very small number of of general-use aftershaves (few splashes, many soaps, no matching), or do you like a more medium-ground approach and keep a number of general-use splashes for similar soap scent profiles, but don't have an exact match for each soap (some splashes, some soaps, some matching), or how about a purist route of "I keep few enough soaps to having a matching splash with each soap I use?" (few splashes, few soaps, perfect matching)
Or maybe you just got good enough at shaving that you don't need aftershave. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
For the mods: Hey mods, if you consider this question to be sufficiently "simple" feel free to delete it and I'll take it over there instead. Personally, I feel like this might be worth a larger discussion if people are interested, but I'm a complete newbie so I could be drastically overestimating what I see as valuable.
I tried searching for this topic, but didn't get any results that I felt sufficient.
