Why all the hate on Hem?
I originally got into incense sticks by visiting a local spiritualist shop and saw a huge wall covered in incense and the chakra-shirted shopkeep (nice guy, I don't mean that to sound mean) told me he was burning satya nag champa in the store. I bought some of that and Hem frankincense-myrrh. I loved it all. Most of the store was Hem back then and I explored around with different scents within the brand.
It comes as a shock to me that this subreddit is so anti-Hem. I may not have used anything truly great in quality but I immediately prefer Hem over most of what I see in stores. Gonesh sticks I find a step above appalling, (and other convenience store bands) and I did try what I believe to be a local, small business brand. It was okay but expensive and was basically sticks in a bag stapled shut with a paper label, all in English.
It's my general impression that charcoal incense is good, and I accept that I could be wrong, it's just that the more wood-mash based sticks are more smokey, not less, or carry more chemical smell. I know that's the exact opposite of everything I've read from people here, but that's what I've encountered. I also hate color dyes in incense, it just seems trash-y.
So my main thing is, what's a really high quality incense, if Hem is supposedly lower quality? I've had satya super hit and satya nag champa, but I want suggestions on Indian or Japanese incense sticks that are quality, preferably the more natural (spice, resin, or wood-based) cologne-y scents.
Tl;dr, I think Hem incense sticks are fine quality, but maybe that's because I haven't had real quality. What do you suggest?
