Tokyo marked 1,000 days to go until the opening ceremony of the 2020 Olympics on Saturday, with countdown events held to set the mood for the games.

Preparation for the Olympics, to be held July 24-Aug 9, 2020, is making progress, with its main stadium currently being built in Tokyo's Shinjuku Ward with its completion set for November 2019.

The new National Stadium, the venue of the opening ceremony of the 2020 Summer Olympics, is seen from a helicopter on Friday.

The event featured festival floats and a talk show by weightlifter Hiromi Miyake, who won bronze in the women's 48-kilogram category at last year's Rio de Janeiro Olympics.

In Chiba Prefecture, east of Tokyo, a commemorative event was held at Narita airport to set the mood for the Olympics beginning in less than three years.

Four-time swimming Olympic medalist Kosuke Hagino will also take part in an event held in Kodaira, Tokyo, on Sunday and in Koriyama, Fukushima Prefecture, on Nov 18, to mark the occasion.
