What's with people getting so easily offended in these past few years?

I was out and in our group was this asian girl, and we went to karaoke and the instructions were in some Asian language, and I've seen Asian languages before and know what they look like, so I ask the girl if she understands what's on the screen to help us navigate. Everyone suddenly gets offended, like I literally asked of you understand the language, given that your the most likely person to. Jesus people are so sensitive nowdays.
