What are fun about events?

I am curious, never participated in one...what is so great about it? is it great to make currency? get items? the prizes are a bit meh but even so, i am not good enough to even get close to getting anyone of them.

Also I am not great at leveling up so quickly, it normally takes me 1 week until i can run maps

Let me know what i am missing out on!
