"I happily played World of Warcraft during 2007–2010, but one day Blizzard removed the damage component from my beloved warlock’s Siphon Life spell. I cried myself to sleep, and on that day I realized what horrors centralized services can bring."

-- Vitalik

I should really send a thank-you note to Blizzard.

Stuff like this is how I know the developers working on Ethereum are going to solve scaling issues before competitors like EOS even get a foothold in the market. Seems like there's a lot of big breakthroughs coming through in 2018!

Yep, maybe too many

I'm still waiting to see someone to build a real application on top of Ethereum, aside from just ICO contracts. Maybe these kind of sidechains will make that possible?

objectivix•

what are your parameters for "real" applications? i know for sure there are plenty of examples, depending on your definition.

7
karbondio•

Yeah I'm not trying to hate, but it seems like up until now the killer app on Ethereum has been ICO smart contracts. I'm bullish on Ethereum long-term, but I think it's not until we have dapps with mainstream appeal that it will really blow up.

Have you heard of decentraland?

That's because people who needed funding for fancy applications did ICOs to get the funding, so naturally ICOs came first.

E.g. Maker had an ICO a couple years ago and they launched their stablecoin today.

Maker just launched the first flagship app on Ethereum today.

CryptoKitties! (Which, by the way, went very popular the same exact week of my ICO with Locipro.com)

Is there any information to when Sidechains will be available on Ethereum?

2
UnpredictableFetus•

From the article: "Loom Network is coming in Q1 2018."

5
bijansha•

That's amazing. This should really push Ethereum towards much larger volume of transactions. Looking forward.

An argument could be made that exchanges like Coinbase are a sidechain. All trades are made off-chain and then settled on the main chain.

1
bijansha•

Yes and no. The Coinbase ledger is as centralized as it could get.
