It's not really equivalent in my mind. Becoming a world class athlete requires that you not only put an ungodly amount of hours into training and playing over the course of most of your entire life (usually), but that you are also probably in the top 1 percentile physiologically to be able to perform at that level. Watching people play live sports is fun for a lot of reasons, but one of the big ones is seeing someone do incredibly impressive things with their body that most of us could only ever dream of.

Becoming world class at VGs certainly requires a lot of time, but not nearly as much. Everyone who plays is limited by the game engine in place. The ceiling for becoming elite in a VG is a lot lower than becoming a top tier soccer, football, basketball (or whatever) player.

You don't get Wayne Gretzkys and Tiger Woodses in e-sports because despite having to adhere to rules in hockey and golf, those superstars' full potential was ultimately limited by their own ability. If you get a superlative player in a VG, you find that very quickly others rise to their level because they can simply emulate their technique. You can't be as good as Lebron by simply emulating his style.

All that being said, if you like the fact that the top flight e-sports players are regular old shmoes and that's a feature to you, then I get that, but you shouldn't be surprised that as popular as e-sports may get, they'll probably never top the "real" thing, and I don't think that's weird or surprising.

This is a bad comparison. Nobody has trained their entire life to play Overwatch or League of Legends because they've only been around for a few years. Not only did Gretzky, Woods, Jordan, Ronaldo, or whoever else train for years, they also had the benefit of decades of other players, coaches, and professional league play lifting them up.

If people are playing StarCraft 2 in 150 years and hundreds of millions of people are watching them I'm sure the levels of skills will be comparable.

Yeah you put it the same way I always see it as. Someone can always push the limits of human potential in a real sport. In a video game, there's a hard cap to what you can do in a game and it's a pretty low ceiling that theoretically anyone can reach. Almost no one can do what elite athletes can do, however. There's the .01% in the pros, and then there are the all time greats that are even better.

Ehh, esports pro players deserve credit. I play the fuck out of Rocket League to the point of borderline addiction and I'd get curbstomped by any pro team or player. It's only been out for just over 2 years and most pros are nearing 5000-6000 hours of gametime. Pros are putting in full-time job hours and the technical skill required to play at that level is insane. Also, there's still a noticeable improvement in pro players from tournament to tournament.

This part is simply untrue while the rest is objective

In E-sport games there are most certainly “greats” like Wayne Gretzky or LeBron most notably are Faker from league of legends and Flash from Starcraft. There are less in total in comparison to actual sports but that’s due largely to lifespan.

I’m not going to try to minimize their achievements, but comparing “e-sports” greats to Gretzky and LeBron is a bit out there. Not saying there isn’t skill involved in pro-gaming, but I don’t think it’s a fair comparison.

No there definitely are. For example, the original NIP lineup was 87-0 in LAN matches at one point. There are plenty of players in their respective disciplines that are the same level above their contemporaries that Gretzky was. There are a lot of games where technical skill is at a relatively equal level amongst professional players. What separates dominant players are the same intangibles that made players like 99 great, decision making and gamesense. They can all perform the actions, it's a matter of knowing when to perform what action.

This is funny because it’s what sports fans have endured through all of history until the invention eSports.

Yeah, my first thought was that you could easily reverse these, except maybe change "it's pretty funny" to "It's really cool" or something, then have the last panel be a guy watching the video game.

Wuss_Poppin•

The difference is I anyone can play a video game at pretty much any age where as only the most gifted and talented people on the planet get to play sports past 18 because there isn’t just enough room for it.

You might be thinking of professional sports, but plenty of people play sports after high school. They play in college or for other amateur organizations, like bar leagues and such.

Well they’re aren’t many people playing football, lacrosse, ice hockey, rugby, you name it past the high school age. It’s especially hard for lesser known sports like lacrosse or less popular sports in general.

It really depends on location. I’m leaving my college’s club lacrosse team for a men’s league this season. I’m fortunate enough to live in a large city, but I know some guys on my old college team are struggling to find a new league now that they’ve graduated.

Things like table tennis also have professionals and many people play recreationally as well.

this one isn't so much anti-sports as it is pro-videogames. let's be real, if the panels were reversed, we'd all be circlejerking about how true it is

That is a great point, why do sports fans give me shit for watching Markiplier playing Senran Kagura when they're watching some athletes on the TV playing sports?

^ Before you downvote, I am making a joke; Senran Kagura sucks balls and Markiplier is a talentless hack. I don't watch LPs, and I don't watch sports either. I prefer being the player.

Yeah, I targeted sports fans.

SPORTS FANS!!
