Grinches and Whos (A Point-of-View Fable written in rhyme)

Feedback Received!

Now we've all heard the tale of the evil old Grinch
With his terrible ways and his horrible stench.
How he robbed the poor Whos of their Christmas delight.
Took off with their toys like a thief in the night.

But listen up, people, it’s time that we knew
The side of the story that’s not from a Who.
And when my tale’s done, I hope you’ll recall
The reason that Grinches have hearts way too small.

All the Whos down in Whoville had painted things red.
But the Grinch painted flowers on his house instead.
So some Whos got together and beat the Grinch up.
“Only SISSIES like flowers!” they huffed and they puffed.

The little Who children threw rocks at his home.
They hooted and hollered and hit him with stones.
The Who Mommies giggled. The Who Daddies beamed.
That old Grinch deserved it. Besides! He was GREEN!

Sadly, the Grinch went and lived in a cave.
But the Whos still weren’t happy. That Grinch had to pay!
His flowers had stunk up their little Who town.
That Grinch was a PANSY! He had to go down!

Day after day as the stones kept on flying,
The joy that the Grinch used to feel started dying.
When someone is constantly told that they stink,
Their smile starts to fade and their heart starts to shrink.

Now the Grinch has a heart that’s the size of a pea,
While the Whos stay in Whoville, as smug as can be.
And your Grinches and Whos barely do get along,
But I leave you to ponder: “Who’s right?” and “Who’s wrong?”

I really enjoyed reading this. I like how you were able to keep it in a rhyme scheme that was similar to Dr.Seuss's style, considering you were using characters that he had written. This painted some pretty colorful imagery in my head too, with things like the flowers on his house really standing out. I also like how you used more simple language, I feel as though it helped to bring out the big point you were making as well as keeping in the style of writing.

This is an excellent comment. I can't improve upon it. I can only add the poem has that similar musical quality that Dr. Seuss managed to incorporate in all of his work. Also, the poet was able to comment on some of our society's ills without being blatant or obvious. Great effort!

Hey guys, I realize this is actually an allegory. Please pardon my ignorance. I am learning the difference between my literary terms every day.

Y'know, I was expecting the rhyme to falter or lose pace half way through, as happens with a lot of poems you see on here - but no, pace, flow, theme & meaning are all spot on. Keep up the good work :)
