When you care about someone else's well-being more than you care about your own.

I have almost the exact same definition. Wow!

Bullshit, that's codependence. Got nothing to do with love whatsoever.

I love that comment.

"Love is the delusion that one woman differs from another." - H.L. Mencken

Mencken was an insightful, little prick. Great quote!

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking. It is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil, but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

Love is when you flip on the radio in the car and suddenly every song lyric -- even songs you've been listening to for years without ever hearing the lyrics -- is perfectly apposite.

This is my favorite way to define love, but unfortunately it is also a great way to define heartbreak.

  • Accepting someone for everything they are, and everything they are not.
  • Being willing to deal with oneself for another.
  • The state of putting the well being of another above one's own sense of self preservation

I heard a quote somewhere (don't remember where though). Went something like this:

"When the want for someone outweighs the need for someone." - Unknown

If someone can find the origin of that quote, that would be greatly appreciated.

"The highest possible evaluation."

Assume a scale from -100 to +100. The higher the number the more one values the object, with 100 being the highest evaluation, whatever object that is for you. Thus the scale is:

hate [-100] < dislike < indifference [0, or meh] < like < love [+100]

It appears to take the romance out of it, but in fact allows one to see romance more clearly, and why it too has a high value. :)

Love can't be put into words, and it can sweep you away when you're not expecting it.

I'm afraid you may not understand. Hate is just a subset of love, in which the person takes up just as much of your thought and energy but in a negative way. The opposite of love is death.

Love is the dance of the universe between opposing polarities. Walk out your front door, and everything you see happened for love. Trees and bees and flowers are having a grand orgy all around us daily. The ocean's waves do the great slow hump of the tide, wearing away slowly at the mountain and creating tiny fractal children.

Love is a human word to describe the nature of the universe to tend towards order and complexity. Its opposite is not hate, for to hate someone you must love to hate them. The opposite of love is death, entropy, Thanatos. And yet, in the balance and harmony of all things, Eros and Thanatos yet dance on the dualistic material plane. To reconcile them, one must realize Universal Love and the great mating dance of Time.
