How do you get toddlers to take medicine?

Advice Request

My son (15 months) has an ear infection and is spitting out most of his medicine. Motrin, amoxicillin, cough medicine, you name it, spits most of it out regardless of how sugary it tastes. Used to love the stuff, now not so much.

Anyone have any tips on getting their toddler to swallow medicine?

Maybe absorbing them on a piece of sandwich bread, maybe a little dab of peanut butter. Does he eat solid food?

Yeah, he loves food, though he’s been pretty picky since he got sick. Worth a shot.

I saw a photo of a mom holding a pop can (soda can to all you non-Midwesterners) with a straw. The straw was actually in a small vile holding his dose of medicine and the vile was hiding behind the can.

You may only be able to use this to trick him once but it’s worth a shot.

I’m thinking we might mix it with some juice and put it in a sippy cup. I honestly think he likes the taste but just wants to control it himself.

For acetaminophen, we always used Fever All suppositories.

Hadn’t thought of suppositories. Supposit’s worth a shot if all else fails.

Have 2 year old with JIA and struggle to get naproxen down twice a day. I had some success mixing it with chocolate syrup on a spoon. Good luck!

We mix it in a drink, usually juice, and then pretend he isn't allowed it. When he does get it he drinks it down really quickly. Tonight was a massive fail because we put it in Ribena and he was hyper for an hour and went to bed an hour later than we expected.

Just tried apple juice. It went...ok. He drank like 80% of it though he really didn’t like the taste of it. Might try some other kind of juice with a stronger flavor next time to mask the taste of the amoxicillin. I like the reverse psychology idea.
