The real question is, what keyboard is that

Leopold FC900R Navy with MX Browns and PBT caps. It's a pretty nice full size keyboard for the money. I live by the MechanicalKeyboards.com store so I have too many keyboards.

I've got the FC900R on my list

Go with Topre my dude.

Topre is just rubber dome.

The guys at MK.com are awesome! They made a really nice donation to the Boston Meetup. Plus they now stock Realforce, which is great, considering how spotty the stock at EliteKeyboards is.

Reeeeally looking hard at the Leupold... I want an 80% (keyboard, not lower. Although also lower) to try out at work, because I have a numpad that I use often enough to need it but want to shift up the ergonomics. I also built a Planck a few years ago that I love on my home computer. And a gh60 Satan that I built for my grandmother but she ended up not liking the clears, gonna build her a new one with reds or blacks. Have you tried gats at all?

Heh. I never realized how much crossover speak there is between these two hobbies.

Came here to ask the same.. but why? Is there a benefit to having the letters on the side of the keys?

2

  1. You can still see the marks from a normal sitting position
  2. Over time, the markings would be destroyed by the oil/dirt on your fingers. By moving them, you effectively extend the life of the keycaps.
  3. Looks slick as hell

ricopotamus•

Does look slick! And makes sense!

Depending on how the lettering is either embedded, etched, or printed onto the key, and the key material, the lettering can fade over time including the texture of the pad from finger erosion and sedimentation of skin oil and debris. I don't really need to see the labels, but it's nice when I'm drunk.

Higher speed, less drag when typing

Looks like a Das Keyboard

I was thinking the same

The DAS 4 ultimate black doesn't have the keys printed on the front and the bevel around the keys is wider.

Building a Mk12 Mod 1 and it's been a crawl hunting forum listings for parts at a good price. Pictured so far are:

A2 complete lower

KAC FF RAS Long

TS-30-A2

Ops Brake and Long Collar

Harris SRBM with KM lock

KAC Bipod Rail Mount

KAC Vero Beach rail covers borrowed from a 2000 Vero Beach carbine rail that's another clone

Still need a Colt receiver, KAC front and rear sights, Douglas barrel, Badger gas block, and I'm deciding about the A1 receiver. I need the A2 lop.

Don’t forget a Geiselle SSA or a KAC match trigger.

2
Mr_Mk12•

Have the SSA on my Mod1. Highly recommend.

3
cs556•

That’s the more authentic choice if you go with Geiselle on a mk12 build. I couldn’t resist going with the SSA-E though. It’s perfect for a DM type rifle.

1
VolucrisOP8•

Have an SSA-E. Forgot to list it.

2
cs556•

Nice! Love that trigger.

Thaflash_la•

I still reminisce about the days when people were offloading KAC RAS’s dirt cheap. Like aluminum bitcoin.

StickShift5•

What purpose do the markings on to the Leupold's main tube serve? Are they for alignment during mounting?

3
VolucrisOP8•

Exactly that. And the military loves a good witness mark.

2
StickShift5•

Neat. Do they put the rings in the right location lengthwise along the scope as well as help with the rotation?

Does the MK12 Mod 1 have to have a quad rail to be a MK12? If not- can I ask why you chose the put a heavy quad rail on it?

*Newish to guns, sorry if this is a dumb question

3
VolucrisOP8•

Yes, it does. The thing about cloning military rifles is better stuff typically exists, but you have to make it the same as the original to be a clone, within some reason such as machine gun lowers or homemade parts. The Mk Mod 1 is really most notable due to that KAC rail, and the Ops brake and long collar on a 18" barrel. Additionally there's a mod 0, and mod H(sorta) that use versions of PRI's tube.

And before that are the SPR project builds out of Ft Campbell which are a Mixmaster of off the shelf parts from the time, and not really any build sheet just yet. Actually I know a fellow who was on the original SPR team building those guns. Long before Knight's and PRI we're involved.

That’s super interesting! Thanks so much for the reply!

Thaflash_la•

And most Mod 0’s you see aren’t, or at least aren’t in the original configuration, since they were originally using the inferior gen 2 pri tubes. Then the gen3’s used an ARMS extended top rail with peq 2 cutout (now people are usually using a PRI one that is different), that is now also difficult to find. For some reason I offloaded my gen3 setup for cheap back in the day.

The Mod 1 was really an improvement over the gen2 pri stuff, even though I really like the look of the original Mod 0.

What's the story with these? How do they compare to nodak or the brownells retro lowers? I missed picking up one of the brownells lowers when they were still available.

3
Xavierpony•

I know you meant sourcing the parts individually but now I'm disappointed there no highly detailed Lego model of the gun.

1
Mr_Mk12•

Honestly I don’t know. I picked up a Nodak lower from a guy local to me out of pure luck but a lower is hard to screw up I suppose.
